MAAAGC - Presenter Bios

Riley, Floyd M. Riley, a charter member of the AAGG of Philadelphia, has been involved in family/historical research since 1983 and has traveled extensively in pursuit of uncovering genealogical information regarding his ancestors.

Medich, Catherine Stearns Medich has been a Reference Archivist at the New Jersey State Archives for ten years.

Hartley, Jeffery Hartley is currently the Chief Librarian for the Archives Library Information Center, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). He has been a librarian with NARA since 1990.

Zahn, Catherine (Casey) Zahn, a professional educator, has authored All About My Family and Family News, two teaching guides for grades K-6. She is a trustee of the Genealogical Society of NJ and the national program chair for the 2008 Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference in Philadelphia.

Wright, Giles R. Wright has authored several works on African American history & migration and is the Director of the Afro-American History Program for the New Jersey Historical Commission.

Burt, Richard Burt is a retired Engineer whose genealogy work spans numerous generations, as evidenced by the thousands of ancestors whose data are organized in his Personal Ancestral File (PAF).

Washington, Reginald Washington, is an archivist and genealogist at the NARA, specializing in African American genealogical research.

Young, Alice Young is director of the Cherry Hill Family History Center. With decades of genealogy experience, she has taught other family researchers and presented on family history for over ten years.

Thursby, Jane Thursby is the President of the Frederick County Genealogical Society and a member of the Baltimore County Genealogical Society, Carroll County Genealogical Society, St. Mary's Genealogical Society, Prince George's Genealogical Society, and National Genealogical Society.

Koford, Rebecca Lind Koford is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, National Genealogical Society, and New England Historic Genealogical Society.

Vargus / Logan, Ione Dugger Vargus is a Professor and Dean Emerita of Temple University. She is the founder and volunteer administrator of the Family Reunion Institute of Temple University.

John Logan is co-founder of the African American Genealogy Group of Philadelphia, and a charter member of the Family Reunion Institute at Temple University.

Lyon, John C. Lyon, an aerospace consultant, has completed a digital map and database of the more than 10,000 Maryland private land grants on the lower Eastern Shore.

Jordon, Shamele Jordon is a researcher for the PBS series Oprah's Roots: An African American Lives Special and African American Lives II; Advisory Board Member of the Family Reunion Institute; former President of the African American Genealogy Group (AAGG) of Philadelphia; and lecturer at the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research.

Gentry, Hollis L. Gentry is a genealogist and special projects researcher at the National Headquarters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Walton-Raji, Angela Walton-Raji is author of Black Indian Genealogy Research, African Ancestors Among the Five Civilized Tribes. She specializes in researching the records of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole Nations, and has spoken nationally about researching Black & Indian family history. She is the first and only genealogist to present genealogy workshops at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. Her work has also been featured by projects of the National Endowment for the Humanities, Parade Magazine and other publications including her recently being quoted the April 2008 issue of Ebony Magazine. She maintains the African-Native American web site as well as the discussion board on AfriGeneas. She works at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and continues her work and research on African-Native American history and genealogy.

Barnes, Richard Barnes, a retired Air Force Master Sergeant after 25 years of service, has worked at the Library of Congress since 1991. Richard joined AAHGS in 1995 and has served as its Veteran History Project (VHP) Coordinator since 2004. He is currently a member of the AAHGS-Prince George’s County Maryland Chapter, Prince George’s County Maryland Genealogy Society, and the Louisiana Genealogy Society. Richard has also served as the Volunteers Coordinator for all AAHGS National Conferences since 1997. His primary area of research is in Tangipahoa and St. Tammy Parishes, Louisiana, focusing on the surnames of Plummer, Cyprian, and Cousin or Cousan.

Matin, Reverend Khadijah Matin, MS, serves as the National President of AAHGS. Her research focus areas include African American Midwest history and Native American/African American research. Khadijah is also an Executive Board member of the Kansas Institute for African American and Native American Family History (KIAANAFH).

Kittles, Rick Kittles, PhD, received a BS in Biology from the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1989 and a PhD in Biological Sciences from George Washington University in 1998. Dr. Kittles’ research has been featured in five BBC and PBS network documentaries related to human biological diversity, race and genetic ancestry. Currently he is Associate Professor of Genetic Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago.

Hynson, Jerry Hynson is President Emeritus of the Maryland Genealogical Society and Vice President of the Baltimore Chapter of AAHGS. He has received the James W. Dent Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in African American History and Genealogy.

Patrick, Bob Patrick is the Director of the Library of Congress Veterans History Project located in the American Folklife Center. This congressionally mandated program is responsible for the collection and preservation of wartime accounts of veterans from WWI to current conflicts. Mr. Patrick is a retired US Army colonel and former director with the National WWII Memorial Project in Washington, DC.
